Title: Sr. Mechanical Systems Engineer

Virgin Galactic is hiring a Sr. Mechanical Systems Engineer with a background in hardware integration for Aerospace and/or Space applications, including new development as well as in-service programs. You will be creating innovative designs and problem resolutions that meet our demanding requirements through prototyping, hands-on design and working directly with our technicians on the vehicles as part of our standard practice. You will have the opportunity to collaborate and coordinate with multiple groups, including structural integrity, systems, structures, production/maintenance control and supply chain. Focus on timeliness and execution of tasks and deliverables every day. Support the company strategy by holding ourselves and one another accountable for getting the work done.
Responsibilities
- Develops engineering drawings for parts, assemblies and installations in 3DExperience and CATIA V5.
- Creates Process Specifications and Engineering Standards.
- Supports team in developing of documents to support flight operations.
- Aids Production/Maintenance by producing repair/rework dispositions.
- Provides accountability by maintaining Actions item and Burn Down lists to support development teams and Maintenance Operations.
- Produces custom reports such as long lead items and discrepancy lists.
- Performs trade studies of multiple solutions to present to program leadership.
- Demonstrates flexibility in design philosophy to quickly pivot between solutions to support turn times and commercial goals.
- Directs the application of existing principles and guides development of new policies and ideas.
- Drives safety behavior and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) awareness/prevention; ensureingadherence to regulatory protocols and rules.
- Works collaboratively to achieve goals and/or complete assigned tasks.
- Applies learned techniques and contributes to analysis and investigation to solve problems.
Required Skills and Experience
- B.S. Engineering Degree from an accredited university or combination of education and work experience is required.
- 8+ years of relevant work experience within Mechanical Design.
- Relevant mechanical design and manufacturing experience preferably focused on or within aerospace.
- Experience with 3D Modeling and Drafting with 3DExperience, CATIA V5, or similar packages, some familiarity with SolidWorks is helpful.
- Experience with material and part selection.
- Experience with understanding electrical schematics and wiring and the typical interface with mechanical systems.
- Ability to communicate in a manner that is timely, respectful, and open to other ideas.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with vehicle instrumentation for flight test and health monitoring a plus.
- Experience with composite vehicles is a plus.
- Experience with schematics in Microsoft Vision is a plus.
- Strong mechanical attitude working with kinematic models and flight hardware, hands on work, related hobbies a plus.

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $108,871.00–$166,036.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
